D-CPP, also known as (R)-3-(2-carboxypiperazin-4-yl)propyl-1-phosphonic acid, is a highly potent and selective competitive antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. It is primarily utilized as a research tool in experimental studies to investigate the role of NMDA receptors in various neurological processes, including memory formation and long-term potentiation. Unlike some other NMDA receptor antagonists, D-CPP is water-soluble and capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier, enabling its systemic administration in vivo for research purposes. It exhibits some selectivity for GluN2A-containing NMDA receptors, though it also antagonizes other GluN2 subunits with lower affinity.
