Overview

D-cysteine is the D-enantiomer of cysteine, a non-essential thiol-containing amino acid with the molecular formula C₃H₇NO₂S. Unlike the more common L-cysteine found in proteins, D-cysteine is not incorporated into mammalian proteins but can be found in some bacterial cell walls and as a metabolic intermediate. It has been studied for its antibacterial properties and as a regulator of neural progenitor cell proliferation. Experimental research also explores its potential to reverse opioid-induced respiratory depression when used as an ester derivative, though the parent compound itself appears inactive in this context[1][3][5]. Its mechanism of action may involve redox-dependent processes due to its thiol group.
