Overview

**D-fagomine** is a naturally occurring iminosugar derived from buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) and present in some other plants. It is a small molecule, structurally related to 1-deoxynojirimycin. D-fagomine acts as a mild glycosidase inhibitor, particularly of intestinal sucrase and other glycosidases, resulting in reduced postprandial blood glucose when ingested with carbohydrates. Its antihyperglycemic effect is not associated with stimulation of insulin secretion. Beyond glycemic control, D-fagomine modulates the gut microbiota by selectively agglutinating and inhibiting the adhesion of certain pathogenic bacteria (such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella), while favoring beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus. There is also evidence that D-fagomine can modulate immune responses (increasing TNF-alpha in immune cells) and may counteract dietary-induced metabolic dysfunctions such as hypertension, liver steatosis, and oxidative stress. Evaluated as a functional food ingredient and dietary supplement to reduce risk of insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and excess of pathogenic gut bacteria[1][3][6][7][8].
