D-leucine is the D-enantiomer of leucine, a branched-chain amino acid. Unlike its natural counterpart L-leucine, which is essential for protein synthesis and muscle growth, D-leucine is not commonly found in nature and is primarily synthesized for research and potential therapeutic applications. Recent preclinical studies have shown that D-leucine can potently terminate ongoing seizures in animal models without the sedative effects seen with traditional anticonvulsants like diazepam. Its mechanism of action appears to be distinct from known neuronal pathways involved in seizure control, suggesting a novel target or pathway. Beyond its experimental use as an anti-seizure agent, D-leucine has applications in dietary supplements for muscle recovery and as a chiral building block in pharmaceutical development[1][2][3][5][8].
