Overview

D-Lys6 gonadotropin-releasing hormone is a synthetic peptide analog of the naturally occurring gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), also known as luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH). It functions as a potent agonist of the GnRH receptor, primarily located on gonadotrope cells in the pituitary gland. Upon binding, it initially stimulates the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). However, continuous exposure leads to desensitization and downregulation of the GnRH receptors, ultimately suppressing gonadotropin and sex hormone production. This mechanism makes it a valuable research tool for exploring reproductive physiology and investigating hormone-dependent conditions such as prostate, breast, and ovarian cancers, as well as various gynecological disorders and precocious puberty. While primarily designed for biological research and industrial applications, its action is analogous to clinically used GnRH agonists.
