Overview

D-mannose is a naturally occurring monosaccharide (simple sugar) closely related to glucose and found in many fruits, as well as produced endogenously in the human body. It plays a key role in glycosylation of proteins and is involved in various biological processes. D-mannose is primarily used as a dietary supplement for the prevention and treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs), although robust clinical evidence for this use remains limited. Its main mechanism involves binding to FimH adhesin on type 1 fimbriae of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), thereby preventing bacterial adherence to urothelial cells and reducing infection risk. Additionally, it is approved for treating carbohydrate-deficient glycoprotein syndrome type 1b, an inherited metabolic disorder, where it helps correct glycosylation defects[1][3][4][6][8].
