Overview

D-mannuronic acid is a uronic acid monosaccharide and a key monomeric unit of alginate, a natural polysaccharide found in brown algae. It is commonly used in its sodium salt form for biomedical applications, particularly as a component in the production of alginate hydrogels for drug delivery systems. These hydrogels are valued for their ability to encapsulate drugs and enable controlled release, making them useful in research on cancer, bacterial infections, and cardiovascular diseases[4]. β-D-Mannuronic Acid (sometimes referred to as M2000) has also been studied as an experimental non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with immunosuppressive properties and potential antidiabetic, cardioprotective, and anti-tumoral effects[7][5]. The mechanism of action involves modulation of immune responses; however, specific molecular targets are not fully established.
