Overview

D-phenylalanine is the D-enantiomer of phenylalanine and a synthetic amino acid not found in significant amounts in natural proteins. It has been marketed as a prescription drug under various brand names and is primarily used for its potential antidepressant and analgesic effects. The main mechanism of action is believed to be inhibition of enkephalinase enzymes that degrade endogenous opioid peptides called enkephalins. This inhibition may increase levels of enkephalins in the body, leading to anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Some studies also suggest possible anti-craving properties. While it has been used clinically in Argentina since at least the 1970s as an antidepressant and pain modulator, robust clinical evidence supporting its efficacy remains limited[5][8].
