D-serine is the dextrorotatory enantiomer of serine, a non-essential amino acid. It is synthesized in the body from L-serine by serine racemase and is present in neurons and glial cells. D-serine acts as a coagonist at the glycine site of NMDA-type glutamate receptors, modulating their activity. By binding to this site, it facilitates NMDA receptor activation in conjunction with glutamate, playing a critical role in synaptic plasticity, learning, memory formation, and neurodevelopmental processes. It has been investigated for potential therapeutic use in neurological and psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia due to its ability to enhance NMDA receptor function[1][2][5][6].
