Overview

D-threonine is the unnatural enantiomer of the amino acid threonine. Unlike L-threonine—which is proteinogenic and essential in humans—D-threonine is not incorporated into proteins but serves as a chiral building block in chemical synthesis and pharmaceutical manufacturing. It belongs to the class of organic compounds known as d-alpha-amino acids and has applications as a synthetic intermediate for chiral antibiotics and other chiral compounds. In biological systems such as yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), it can act as a metabolite. Experimentally, it has been shown to inhibit growth and cell wall synthesis in certain bacteria like Mycobacterium smegmatis[1][3][4][5][6]. There are no approved medical indications or clinical uses for D-threonine in humans.
