Overview

D-tyrosine is the D-enantiomer of tyrosine, a non-essential amino acid that serves as a precursor to key neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. It is synthesized from phenylalanine in animals and also acts as a precursor for thyroid hormones and melanin[2][1]. While L-tyrosine is commonly found in proteins and used in dietary supplements, D-tyrosine has been studied primarily for its experimental roles. These include potential applications in mood enhancement, cognitive function support, stress management, sports nutrition (for reducing fatigue), skin health (via melanin production), and inhibition of bacterial biofilm formation[1][6]. In pharmaceutical development, it has been investigated for treating conditions like depression and anxiety[1]. Mechanistically, D-tyrosine can influence neurotransmitter synthesis pathways and may act on amino acid transporters involved in thyroid hormone homeostasis[2].
