Drug intelligence / Profile preview
D. salina carotenoid fraction is a natural extract derived from the halophilic green microalga *Dunaliella salina*. This microalga is one of the richest natural sources of beta-carotene, which it accumulates in large quantities, particularly when cultivated under stressful conditions like high salinity and intense light. [2, 4, 17] The extract is a complex mixture and not a single chemical entity. Its primary component is beta-carotene, present as a mix of isomers including all-trans- and 9-cis-beta-carotene. [3, 8] In addition to beta-carotene, the fraction contains a variety of other carotenoids such as alpha-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and cryptoxanthin, alongside other naturally occurring compounds like fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. [1, 3, 4, 5] Due to this rich composition, the extract exhibits potent antioxidant properties. [15] It is commercially produced and marketed primarily as a dietary supplement and as a natural colorant in the food industry. [3, 11, 13] Common brand names for this extract include Betatene®. [9]
