Overview

D9-methyl-POPC (D9-POPC) is a deuterium-labeled research compound and stable isotope tracer used to investigate the choline metabolic pathway. Chemically, it is a phosphatidylcholine (PC) lipid, specifically D9-1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-glycero-3-phosphoryl-choline, where the three methyl groups of the choline headgroup are substituted with nine deuterium atoms (D9 labeling). It is being studied by the University Hospital Tübingen (Universitätsklinikum Tübingen) in Germany as part of a pharmacokinetic tracer study (DRKS00020502) in preterm infants. The compound is designed to track the incorporation of choline into membrane lipids and its conversion into downstream metabolites like betaine. Unlike water-soluble choline forms such as choline chloride, D9-methyl-POPC is an enteral lipid-based supplement that undergoes fatty-acyl remodeling before systemic delivery, resulting in high plasma levels of labeled phosphatidylcholine. This research aims to optimize nutritional strategies for preterm infants at risk of choline deficiency.
