DA-9801 is a standardized botanical drug composed of mixed ethanol extracts from the rhizomes of Dioscorea japonica Thunberg and Dioscorea nipponica Makino. It is being developed as a neuroprotective phytomedicine for the treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The primary mechanism involves stimulation of endogenous nerve growth factor (NGF) levels, which supports neuronal survival, maintenance, and repair following injury. Preclinical studies have shown that DA-9801 increases NGF in target tissues, improves nerve conduction velocity, and aids recovery from nerve degeneration in diabetic models. The active components include furostanol saponins among other phytochemicals[1][3][4]. Clinical development has reached phase II for diabetic neuropathic pain[3][7].
