Overview

Da Chai Hu Tang (大柴胡汤), also known as Major Bupleurum Decoction, is a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula originating from the ancient text Shang Han Lun by Zhang Zhongjing. It is composed of multiple herbs including Bupleuri Radix (Chai Hu), Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Bai Shao), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Ban Xia), Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Da Huang), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhi Shi), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Sheng Jiang), and Jujubae Fructus (Da Zao)[1][4][10]. The formula harmonizes and disperses Shao Yang disorders while draining internal heat retention. Its primary indications are for combined Shaoyang and Yangming syndromes with symptoms such as alternating chills and fever, abdominal fullness or pain, constipation, irritability, nausea/vomiting, yellow tongue coating, and a strong rapid pulse[8]. Modern applications include treatment of liver and gallbladder diseases such as cholecystitis and cholestasis; digestive conditions like acute pancreatitis; metabolic disorders including obesity and diabetes; inflammatory diseases such as hepatitis; migraine headaches; peptic ulcer disease; pleurisy; gastrointestinal flu[5][8][10]. Pharmacological studies suggest it reduces fever, promotes bile secretion, relieves inflammation, improves digestion/metabolism[8][10].
