Overview

Da Yuan Yin (DYY) is a classical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) decoction, originally described in the 17th-century text *Wen Yi Lun* (Treatise on Pestilence) for the treatment of infectious diseases. Modern pharmacological research identifies DYY as a potential therapeutic for sepsis, demonstrating significant anti-inflammatory and intestinal protective effects. In preclinical models, DYY has been shown to alleviate sepsis-induced intestinal injury by suppressing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, and by promoting the expression of intestinal tight junction proteins like claudin-1, occludin, and ZO-1. Furthermore, DYY modulates the gut microbiota, specifically promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillales, which leads to increased levels of protective short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and reduced β-glucuronidase activity. These combined actions help maintain intestinal homeostasis and mitigate systemic organ dysfunction during sepsis.
