Overview

DAB-16 is a specific dendrimer-linked nitroxide, a type of nanoparticle, developed as a positively charged magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent for cartilage. It is composed of a polypropyleneimine (DAB) dendrimer with 16 nitroxide groups attached to its terminal amines. The drug is designed to assess cartilage matrix compositional alterations, particularly in osteoarthritis, by diffusing preferentially into cartilage due to its positive charge and attraction to the negatively charged glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) within the cartilage matrix. This diffusion leads to enhanced MRI signal intensity by interacting with protons in water, allowing for better visualization and assessment of cartilage health.
