Dabigatran is an oral anticoagulant classified as a direct thrombin inhibitor. It is used to prevent and treat blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), in adults and children who have been previously treated with injectable anticoagulants. Dabigatran also reduces the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, and it is indicated for the prevention of DVT/PE following hip replacement surgery. The drug acts by directly inhibiting thrombin (factor IIa), a key enzyme in the coagulation cascade responsible for converting fibrinogen to fibrin, thereby preventing clot formation[1][3][5][9]. Dabigatran was developed by Boehringer Ingelheim.
