Overview

Dachengqi Decoction is a classic traditional Chinese herbal formula originally documented in "Discussion of Cold Damage" (220 AD). It consists of four primary herbs: Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Da Huang), Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis (Hou Pu), Fructus Aurantii Immaturus (Zhi Shi), and Natrii Sulfas (Mang Xiao). The formula functions primarily to purge heat from the stomach and intestines and relieve constipation. It is commonly used to treat intestinal obstruction, acute pancreatitis, and promote gastrointestinal motility recovery after surgery. The formula contains various bioactive compounds including tannins, anthraquinones, sennosides, flavonoids (particularly polymethoxyflavones), and lignans. Pharmacological studies have shown that Dachengqi Decoction exhibits anti-inflammatory effects, promotes gastric secretion, improves disorders of gastric electric rhythm, and enhances gastrointestinal motility.
