Overview

This specific combination therapy, consisting of daclizumab, etanercept, exenatide, sirolimus, and tacrolimus, was studied in the context of type 1 diabetes treatment. The combination aimed to address both autoimmune aspects and potential beta-cell preservation. It combined immunosuppressive agents (daclizumab, sirolimus, tacrolimus), an anti-inflammatory agent (etanercept), and a GLP-1 receptor agonist (exenatide). The goal was to promote beta-cell growth, limit beta-cell apoptosis (via exenatide), and weaken anti-beta-cell autoimmunity (via immunosuppressants). Clinical research, involving at least 6 patients, indicated that this experimental approach, even when combined with intensified insulin therapy, did not induce improved function of remaining beta-cells in patients with long-standing type 1 diabetes.
