Overview

Dacus Carota Exosomes (DC-Ex) are plant-derived extracellular vesicles (exosomes) isolated from black carrots (*Dacus Carota L spp.*). They are being developed as a therapeutic intervention for hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in patients with chronic liver disease. DC-Ex are enriched with bioactive phytochemicals, including anthocyanins, quercetin, dopamine, 3-O-glucoside, xanthotoxin, and tangeretin. The therapeutic mechanism involves modulating the gut-liver-brain axis by restoring gut microbial homeostasis, specifically by increasing beneficial Firmicutes (such as *Lachnoclostridium* and *Bacteroides*) and decreasing urease-producing taxa like *Escherichia-Shigella*. This modulation leads to a reduction in blood ammonia levels, improved gut mucosal integrity through enhanced junctional communications, and improved cognitive and sensory-motor functions. The drug is currently in early development, with research led by the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences.
