Overview

Dahuang Mudan Tang (DHMD) is a classical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal decoction first recorded in the *Jin Gui Yao Lue*. It is a multi-herb formula composed of five traditional medicines: Dahuang (rhubarb), Mudan Pi (moutan bark), Taoren (peach kernel), Donggua Ren (winter melon seed), and Mangxiao (mirabilite). Clinically, it is widely used in China for the treatment of acute pancreatitis, intestinal abscesses (analogous to acute appendicitis), and pelvic inflammatory disease. Research indicates that the formula exerts anti-inflammatory, pro-apoptotic, and organ-protective effects through the modulation of key signaling pathways such as PI3K-Akt and AGE-RAGE. Its primary bioactive components include kaempferol, quercetin, and eupatin, which target proteins like TNF-α, IL-6, and AKT1. Experimental studies also suggest potential efficacy in pancreatic carcinoma by promoting tumor cell apoptosis and protecting liver and kidney function.
