Overview

Dahuang Wumei Decoction is a traditional Chinese herbal formula with a long history of clinical use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)[1]. It is composed primarily of two key herbs: Dahuang (Rheum officinale, also known as rhubarb) and Wumei (Mume Fructus, smoked plum). The decoction is traditionally used to treat gastrointestinal disorders such as chronic diarrhea and dysentery, as well as conditions involving heat retention and toxin accumulation. The main active components of Dahuang include anthraquinones like emodin, rhein, chrysophanol, aloe emodin, and physcion[6]. These compounds are associated with various pharmacological effects including anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, hepatoprotective (liver-protecting), immune-modulating activities[1][6]. In TCM theory, the formula works by purging fire/heat (via bitter substances from rhubarb), relaxing the bowels to relieve constipation or clear toxins (rhubarb), and astringing or arresting discharge to stop persistent diarrhea or dysentery (smoked plum)[2]. Modern research has explored its protective effects against liver injury[1] and other inflammatory conditions.
