Overview

Dalteparin is a low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) anticoagulant used to prevent and treat venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), as well as to reduce the risk of ischemic complications in patients with unstable angina or non-Q-wave myocardial infarction. It is also indicated for extended treatment of symptomatic VTE in adults with cancer and for pediatric patients one month of age and older. Dalteparin acts primarily by potentiating the activity of antithrombin III, which leads to inhibition of coagulation factors Xa and IIa (thrombin), with a greater effect on factor Xa. This results in decreased blood clot formation[1][4][6][7]. Dalteparin is administered subcutaneously, has high bioavailability, and is cleared mainly by the kidneys[7]. It was developed by Pharmacia, now part of Pfizer.
