Overview
Dan Ma Jia is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula developed by the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine for the treatment of bronchial asthma. The formula is specifically designed for patients with the 'phlegm-heat obstructing the lungs' syndrome type. It typically contains three primary herbal components: *Arisaema cum Bile* (Dan Nan Xing), *Ephedra* (Ma Huang), and *Carapax Trionycis* (Bie Jia). The therapeutic action is driven by the synergistic effects of these components: Ephedra provides potent bronchodilation via ephedrine and pseudoephedrine acting on adrenergic receptors; Arisaema cum Bile serves to clear heat and resolve phlegm; and Carapax Trionycis is intended to nourish yin and potentially mitigate airway remodeling. The drug has been studied in Phase 2 clinical trials to evaluate its efficacy in improving lung function and reducing asthma symptoms compared to placebo and other TCM mixtures.
