Overview

Dan-shen Yin is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula composed of three ingredients, primarily Red Sage Root (Salvia miltiorrhiza, Dan Shen), Tan Xiang (Sandalwood), and Sha Ren (Amomum villosum)【1】. It was first recorded in 1801 and is primarily used to invigorate blood, dispel blood stasis, and promote Qi movement. Dan-shen Yin is primarily indicated for cardiovascular conditions such as coronary heart disease, angina pectoris, and myocardial infarction, as well as for symptoms linked to blood stasis and Qi stagnation in TCM. Modern pharmacological studies have shown anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects, which are thought to underlie its cardioprotective action【3】. The mechanisms involve reduction of inflammatory cytokines, enhancement of antioxidant enzyme activity, improved blood circulation, and inhibition of platelet aggregation【3】【5】. The formula acts through a synergistic effect of its multiple plant constituents.
