Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is a perennial herb native to Europe and now widespread globally. All parts of the plant—leaf (folium), root (radix), and flower—are used in traditional medicine. Dandelion is rich in vitamins A,C,D,B complex and minerals such as iron, potassium, and calcium[7][8]. Traditionally it has been used for digestive disorders (as a bitter tonic), liver and gallbladder support/detoxification,[6][7][9] mild diuretic effects,[5][8] appetite stimulation,[5] anti-inflammatory activity,[4][5], antioxidant properties[4][7], skin health[4], blood sugar regulation[7], cholesterol lowering[7], immune modulation/antimicrobial effects[4]. In vitro/in vivo studies suggest hepatoprotective,lipid-lowering,hypoglycemic,and anticancer activities; however robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking.[5] The German Commission E approves its use for dyspepsia,liver/gallbladder complaints, and urinary tract infections.[6] It is not FDA-approved as a drug; it is sold as an herbal supplement.
