Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dandelion extract is a botanical preparation derived from the dandelion plant (*Taraxacum officinale*), which has a long history of use in traditional medicine for various ailments, including liver and digestive issues. [1] The extract is rich in bioactive compounds such as sesquiterpene lactones, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. [3] It exhibits multiple pharmacological activities, most notably anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects. [2, 8] Preclinical research, particularly in models of ulcerative colitis, suggests that dandelion extract can alleviate inflammation by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α and IL-6, inhibiting the NF-κB pathway, enhancing the body's antioxidant capacity, restoring gut barrier integrity, and beneficially modulating the gut microbiota. [8, 11] In addition to its therapeutic potential, dandelion extract is used as a diagnostic agent in patch testing to identify allergies to plants in the Compositae family. [5, 20] It is widely available over-the-counter as a dietary supplement in various forms. [9]
