Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Danhun Ningshen Formula (DHNS) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) preparation developed by Guang'anmen Hospital of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, specifically for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The formula is composed of several medicinal herbs, most notably *Salvia miltiorrhiza* (Danshen) and *Albizia julibrissin* (Hehuanpi), which are traditionally indicated for nourishing the heart and calming the spirit. DHNS is thought to exert anxiolytic effects through the modulation of the GABAergic and serotonergic neurotransmitter systems, as well as by regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to reduce stress-induced cortisol levels. It has been studied in clinical settings as an alternative or adjunct to conventional pharmacotherapies like benzodiazepines and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), demonstrating a favorable safety profile with a lower incidence of side effects such as sedation or dependency.
