Overview

Danshen Gegen is a traditional Chinese herbal combination consisting of the roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen) and Pueraria lobata (Gegen). It is widely used in Chinese medicine for its cardioprotective and anti-atherosclerotic effects. The formulation has been studied for its ability to reduce the extent of atherosclerosis, protect against myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury, and modulate early events in atherosclerosis such as macrophage lipid loading and monocyte adhesion to endothelial cells. Mechanistically, it appears to exert antioxidant effects on mitochondria, enhance membrane integrity in cardiac tissue via redox-sensitive protein kinase C-epsilon pathways, inhibit osteoclastogenesis in vitro, relax coronary arteries through vasodilation (attributed mainly to danshen), and modulate inflammatory cell adhesion molecules. Clinical studies suggest potential benefits for coronary heart disease and stroke prevention; however, evidence quality varies. Herb-drug interactions are significant—especially with anticoagulants like warfarin or antiplatelet agents like aspirin—due to effects on drug metabolism and blood clotting parameters[4][5][8][9].
