Overview

Danshensu is a **natural water-soluble phenolic acid** (specifically, (R)-3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-2-hydroxypropanoic acid) derived from the root of *Salvia miltiorrhiza* (danshen), a widely used traditional Chinese medicinal herb[1][2][3][4]. It possesses **antithrombotic, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antidepressant activities**[1][3][5][6]. Its pharmacological actions are mediated through several molecular pathways, including selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibition (without substantial inhibition of COX-1), normalization of thromboxane A2/prostacyclin (TXA2/PGI2) balance, activation of the PI3K/Akt/ERK/mTOR and Nrf2 signaling pathways, modulation of AMPA receptors, upregulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and calcium and potassium channel modulation[1][3][5][6]. It has shown potential in the treatment of thrombosis, myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury, neurodegenerative conditions (e.g., Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease), ischemic stroke, and depression[1][3][5].
