Dantron is a synthetic anthraquinone derivative used primarily as a stimulant laxative. It acts by stimulating the lining of the intestine to induce bowel movements and is mainly indicated for the treatment of constipation, especially in chronic or severe cases and in palliative care to counteract opioid-induced constipation[1][4]. Dantron has also been studied for its antiangiogenic and antitumor properties[6]. Its use has been restricted or withdrawn in several countries (including the US, UK, and Canada) due to concerns about carcinogenicity and genotoxicity[2][4][5][7]. In the UK it is only used under strict conditions for terminally ill patients. Dantron can be administered orally or rectally (as an enema), either alone or in combination with other agents such as poloxamer 188 (co-danthramer) or docusate (co-danthrusate)[4][5].
