dapsone

Dapsone is a synthetic sulfone antibiotic and anti-inflammatory agent primarily used to treat leprosy (Hansen's disease) and dermatitis herpetiformis. It is also used as a second-line treatment for the prevention of pneumocystis pneumonia and toxoplasmosis in immunocompromised patients. Dapsone acts as a bacteriostatic agent by inhibiting the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid through competitive inhibition of dihydropteroate synthase in susceptible organisms such as Mycobacterium leprae. Its anti-inflammatory effects are distinct from its antimicrobial action and involve modulation of neutrophil activity and other inflammatory mediators. Dapsone has been studied for additional uses including acne vulgaris and various chronic inflammatory skin disorders[1][5][6][7].
