Darbepoetin alfa is a recombinant form of human erythropoietin designed to stimulate the production of red blood cells. It is produced using recombinant DNA technology in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells and differs from endogenous erythropoietin by having additional carbohydrate chains that enhance its half-life. Darbepoetin alfa acts as an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA), binding to and activating the erythropoietin receptor on progenitor cells in the bone marrow to increase red blood cell production. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and chemotherapy-induced anemia in patients with non-myeloid malignancies[1][2][3][4][5][6][8].
