JR-131 is a biosimilar of darbepoetin alfa, a long-acting erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) used for the treatment of renal anemia, particularly in patients undergoing hemodialysis. It is produced by recombinant DNA technology in a completely serum-free medium without animal-derived materials. JR-131 was developed to be highly similar to the reference product, darbepoetin alfa, with comparable protein structure and glycosylation patterns. Its mechanism of action involves stimulating erythropoiesis by binding to and activating the erythropoietin receptor on erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow, leading to increased red blood cell production. Developed according to Japanese regulatory guidelines for follow-on biologics, JR-131 has demonstrated equivalent safety and efficacy profiles compared with originator darbepoetin alfa in clinical trials[1][4][5].
