Drug intelligence / Profile preview
DARE-HPV is an investigational, first-in-category treatment for human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cervical disease. Unlike HPV vaccines, which are used for prevention, DARE-HPV is being developed as a therapeutic intervention to treat existing HPV infections and associated cervical lesions. The product consists of a soft-gel vaginal insert containing two antiviral drugs—lopinavir and ritonavir—originally designed for HIV treatment but repurposed here to target HPV infection locally in the cervix. Early proof-of-concept studies demonstrated that this dual-drug approach could clear the virus and heal cervical changes in a significant proportion of women with HPV-related lesions. Daré Bioscience has optimized the formulation for intravaginal delivery and completed phase 1 safety trials; further clinical development is ongoing[6][8]. The mechanism involves local antiviral activity against HPV within cervical tissue.
