DARE-LARC1 is an investigational, user-controlled, long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) implant developed by Daré Bioscience. The device utilizes a proprietary drug delivery platform originally developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and enhanced by Daré Bioscience. It is designed to store and precisely deliver hundreds of doses of levonorgestrel—the active pharmaceutical ingredient—over months or years via a single implant. Unlike current LARCs, DARE-LARC1 allows users to activate or deactivate medication release on demand or according to a pre-set schedule, offering both the convenience of short-acting methods and the security of long-acting contraception. The system features precision dosing through individually addressable micro-reservoirs, extended device duration (potentially up to 20 years), wireless control including smartphone integration, and no need for external charging. While its primary indication is contraception in women’s health, the underlying technology platform may be adaptable for other chronic conditions requiring prolonged treatment such as diabetes and obesity[1][2][3][4][5][6].
