Overview

Daronrix is a pandemic influenza vaccine developed by GSK. It is a whole virion, inactivated vaccine containing the H5N1 antigen (specifically the A/Vietnam/1194/2004 strain) produced in embryonated chicken eggs. The vaccine is adsorbed onto an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant to enhance the immune response. Daronrix was indicated for the prophylaxis of influenza in an officially declared pandemic situation, specifically targeting avian influenza (bird flu). In March 2007, it became the first experimental bird-flu vaccine to receive marketing authorization from the European Commission. However, the marketing authorization was subsequently withdrawn at the request of GSK because the product was never commercially marketed due to a lack of demand.
