darunavir

Darunavir is a second-generation HIV-1 protease inhibitor used in combination with other antiretroviral agents, including pharmacokinetic boosters such as ritonavir or cobicistat, for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in adults and children aged 3 years and older. It works by inhibiting the HIV protease enzyme, which prevents viral replication and decreases the amount of HIV in the blood. Although it does not cure HIV or AIDS, darunavir helps reduce viral load, increase CD4 cell counts, and decrease morbidity and mortality associated with HIV infection. It was initially approved by the FDA in 2006. Darunavir is available as oral tablets and oral suspension formulations.
