Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Vyxeos is a liposomal formulation containing a fixed 1:5 molar ratio of the antineoplastic agents daunorubicin and cytarabine. Developed by Celator Pharmaceuticals (acquired by Jazz Pharmaceuticals) using the proprietary CombiPlex technology platform, it is designed to deliver a synergistic ratio of these two chemotherapies directly to the bone marrow and maintain that ratio intracellularly. Daunorubicin is an anthracycline that inhibits topoisomerase II and intercalates into DNA, while cytarabine is a pyrimidine analog that inhibits DNA polymerase, collectively inducing DNA damage and cell death. Vyxeos is specifically indicated for the treatment of adults with newly diagnosed therapy-related acute myeloid leukemia (t-AML) or AML with myelodysplasia-related changes (AML-MRC), which are high-risk subtypes associated with poor prognosis.
