Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Daunorubicin liposomal (DaunoXome) is an anthracycline antineoplastic agent encapsulated in a liposomal preparation to protect the drug from chemical and enzymatic degradation, reduce protein binding, and decrease uptake by non-target tissues[1]. The liposomal formulation may increase accumulation in tumors. Daunorubicin exerts its cytotoxic effects primarily by intercalating between DNA base pairs, inhibiting topoisomerase II activity, and stabilizing the DNA-topoisomerase II complex, leading to single- and double-strand DNA breaks. It may also inhibit polymerase activity and trigger free-radical DNA damage[1].
