Overview

dBCG-Tokyo is a selectively delipidated formulation of the Mycobacterium bovis BCG Tokyo-172 strain. It is being developed as an improved immunotherapeutic agent for the treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) and as a potential vaccine for tuberculosis. The delipidation process involves the removal of specific surface lipids, such as phthiocerol dimycocerosates (PDIM) and phenolic glycolipids (PGL), which are associated with excessive inflammatory responses and tissue damage. By removing these components, dBCG-Tokyo aims to provide a more tolerable alternative to standard BCG therapy, reducing the incidence of BCG-intolerance while maintaining the ability to stimulate a robust antitumor immune response through the activation of innate immune pathways and recruitment of effector cells.
