DCVax is a platform of personalized (autologous) dendritic cell-based cancer vaccines developed by Northwest Biotherapeutics. The technology involves isolating a patient's precursor immune cells (monocytes) from the blood via leukapheresis, maturing them into dendritic cells, and then 'educating' or pulsing them with tumor-specific antigens. These antigens can be derived from the patient's own tumor lysate (as in DCVax-L) or specific viral/tumor antigens (as in HPV.DCVax). Once re-administered to the patient, typically via intradermal injection, these activated dendritic cells present the antigens to T cells, triggering a systemic and durable immune response against the cancer. The lead candidate, DCVax-L, has demonstrated significant improvements in overall survival in Phase 3 trials for glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). DCVax-Direct is a variant designed for intratumoral injection into various solid tumors that are not easily resectable.
