Overview

Vasculonics is developing a preclinical-stage small molecule modulator of Dimethylarginine Dimethylaminohydrolase 1 (DDAH-1) for the treatment of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). DDAH-1 is the primary enzyme responsible for the metabolism of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Elevated levels of ADMA are associated with endothelial dysfunction and reduced nitric oxide bioavailability, which contribute to the pathogenesis of AKI. By modulating DDAH-1 activity, this therapeutic aims to lower ADMA levels, thereby restoring nitric oxide production and improving renal perfusion and function. The program has received SBIR Phase I funding and is currently in the lead optimization and preclinical testing phase.
