Drug intelligence / Profile preview
DE-109 is an investigational, proprietary intravitreal formulation of sirolimus developed by Santen Inc. for the treatment of active, non-infectious uveitis of the posterior segment (NIU-PS). Sirolimus is a small molecule mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin) inhibitor that functions as a non-steroidal immunomodulator. By inhibiting the mTOR pathway, DE-109 reduces intraocular inflammation while minimizing systemic exposure. It is designed as a steroid-sparing alternative to traditional corticosteroid treatments, potentially offering a lower risk of side effects such as glaucoma and cataract formation compared to corticosteroids. The drug has been evaluated in the SAKURA and LUMINA Phase III clinical trial programs.
