Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Deacetoxycephalosporin C is a small molecule antibiotic and an intermediate in the biosynthesis of cephalosporins. It is produced by certain fungi and bacteria such as Cephalosporium (now Acremonium) and Streptomyces species. Functionally related to cephalosporin C, it serves as a precursor in the enzymatic conversion from penicillin N to cephalosporins via the action of deacetoxycephalosporin C synthase. While it exhibits some antibiotic activity itself, its primary significance lies in its role as a key intermediate for industrial production of semisynthetic cephalosporins[1][3][6]. It is not approved for clinical use in humans.
