Overview

DEBIRI (Drug-Eluting Bead, Irinotecan) is a combination therapy used for transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in patients with unresectable colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). It involves the hepatic intra-arterial injection of drug-eluting beads, such as DC Bead or LC Bead, preloaded with the chemotherapeutic agent irinotecan. The beads embolize the blood vessels supplying the liver tumors, thereby providing localized and sustained delivery of irinotecan directly to the tumor site. This targeted approach aims to maximize drug concentration within the tumor while minimizing systemic exposure and associated side effects. Irinotecan is a topoisomerase I inhibitor, which leads to DNA damage and inhibits cancer cell replication.
