Decapeptide-12 is a synthetic ten-amino acid peptide developed as a skin-lightening agent for the treatment of hyperpigmentation disorders. It functions as a potent competitive inhibitor of tyrosinase, the key enzyme responsible for melanin production in melanocytes. By blocking the enzymatic conversion of L-DOPA to melanin, it effectively reduces skin pigmentation without the cytotoxic side effects associated with traditional treatments like hydroquinone.
