Overview

This experimental transplantation protocol, developed by Stanford University, is designed for patients with end-stage renal disease. The procedure involves a kidney transplant from a deceased donor followed by an infusion of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) harvested from the same donor's vertebral body. To facilitate the engraftment of these donor cells, patients undergo a conditioning regimen that includes lymphoid irradiation and anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG). The primary goal of this combined approach is to induce immune chimerism, a state where the recipient's immune system recognizes the donor organ as self. If successful, this allows for the significant reduction or complete elimination of long-term immunosuppressive medications, which are typically required to prevent organ rejection but carry substantial side effects.
