Decidua stromal cells (DSCs) are a specialized cell-based therapy derived from the maternal decidual layer of term placentas. Developed by researchers at the Karolinska Institutet, including Mats Remberger and Olle Ringden, DSCs are a type of mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) characterized by potent immunomodulatory and immunosuppressive properties. They are primarily utilized for the treatment of severe acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD), particularly in cases that are refractory to standard steroid therapy. DSCs exert their therapeutic effect by inhibiting the proliferation and activity of alloreactive T cells, promoting the induction and expansion of regulatory T cells (Tregs), and shifting the cytokine profile toward an anti-inflammatory state. Compared to bone marrow-derived MSCs, DSCs have demonstrated enhanced immunosuppressive capabilities in clinical settings.
